Ohio Lawn Care Association Outdoor Summer Seminar Scheduled for August 14, 2008

See what’s new in lawn care and landscape maintenance at the 14th annual Ohio Lawn Care Outdoor Summer Seminar, Thursday, August 14, at the Ohio Turfgrass (OTF) Foundation Research and Education Facility in Columbus.

The program features talks, tours and demonstrations by Ohio State University and industry experts.

 Registration for Ohio Lawn Care Association (OLCA) members costs $35 for the first pre-registrant and $25 for each additional pre-registrant from the same company by Aug. 8; and $40 for on-site registration. Registration for non-members costs $70 per person by Aug. 8 and $85 per person on-site.
   

Registration is limited to 200 and includes refreshments, lunch and instructional materials. Lunch is guaranteed only to pre-registered participants.

OLCA, the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), and Ohio State University Extension are the sponsors.

The day starts with registration at 8 a.m., followed by a general session at 9 a.m., “The Green World Above a Three-inch Cut,” with Fred Hower, “The Ohio Nurseryman.”

Afterward, participants will be divided into smaller groups and will spend 30 minutes at each station.
   

The topics include:

  • “Broadleaf Weeds and Herbicide Update” by David Gardner, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OSU.
  • “Turfgrass Insect Diagnostics and Management,” Dave Shetlar, Department of Entomology, OSU.
  •  “Weedy Grasses Management and Fertilizer Update,” John Street, Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, OSU.
  • “Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Update,” Amy Stone, OSU Extension, Lucas County office.
  • “Tree/Shrub Disease Identification and Management,” Joe Rimelspach, Plant Pathology, OSU Extension.

   

The seminar ends with a final general session, “Applicator Record Keeping and Lawn Notification,” Terry Grace, Ohio Department of Agriculture, that starts at 1:25 p.m.

The event also offers equipment displays and demonstrations, the opportunity to earn Pesticide Re-Certification Credits, and the chance to test-drive lawn-maintenance equipment from leading manufacturers.

OARDC and OSU Extension are the research and outreach arms, respectively, of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
